CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background study

The issue of divorce has been in the news a lot lately. More and more marriages are failing because modern culture no longer views marriage as a lifelong commitment as it was intended to be in the Bible. The impacts of divorce on Christian couples are particularly painful, yet Christian marriages are not immune to this trend. The effects of divorce on Christian couples are examined here. In the first place, marriages end because of divorce or separation. The consequences of a divorce are devastating since marriage is not meant to be simply shattered. Marriage is significant for more than simply the two people who enter into it. It has spiritual overtones since it is meant to be a representation of the bond between Christ and the Church. Pain, betrayal, rage, and hopelessness are common reactions to a failed marriage. The trust between them may be severely eroded, and the marriage may end even if the pair decides to work through their issues.

Emotional and spiritual distress are two other ways in which a divorce can affect a Christian couple’s marriage. When a marriage ends, the two people involved lose the emotional and spiritual support they were counting on from one another. Extreme mental and spiritual anguish may result, lowering the standard of living for everyone engaged in the divorce. Feelings of regret and humiliation might result from the breakup, making it hard for both parties to move on and grow from the experience. Children of the marriage may also suffer emotionally and psychologically as a result of a divorce.

Divorce may well be one of the major problems facing the Church today. Ordinarily, an ideal marriage will remain united, undivided, and unbroken. This is the plan written by the mind of the Creator when He gave Eve to Adam as his permanent partner in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:24). Apostel Paul expressed the same view, when he recalled Christ’s prohibition of divorce:

To those, now married, however, I give this command (though it is not mine, it is the Lord’s) a wife must not separate from her husband. If she does separate, she must either remain single or become reconciled to him again. Similarly, a husband must not divorce his wife. (1 Cor. 7: 10-11)

This passage demonstrates that divorce is undesirable, and should not be permitted in the Christian communities. All efforts must be made to encourage couples to stay together or get back together, even when they have separated. However, the intention of this study is not to provide a solution to the social problems caused by marriage and divorce. Rather, the purpose of this study is to place the problem of marriage and divorce in a proper context with respect to the Foursquare Gospel Church, Mupin, Ota, Ogun State. Divorce  connote the division or the separation of parent who have been together and suddenly divorce or terminated their relationship or untie the once agreed marriage knot after exchanging material vows and have lived together. Marriage is an institution that play very important role in the upbringing and the development of human beings, marriage is the joining together of two matured people who agree to spend their lifetime together. Thus taking joint care or responsibility over their children who are the fruits of the union. Marriage aids the realization of many basic individual needs such as the need for status. Companionship, procreation and the need to fulfilling sexual intimacy and satisfaction.

In fact the institution is gradually losing its standard value as statistics show that it is fast diminishing as many homes are broken. The problem of single parenthood is far alarming in our society and the explanations for divorce include among other thongs cheerlessness, parental interference, religious conflicts, poverty and poor mutual understanding. The Christian marriage is not just a mere marriage. Christian marriage is unique, and has been instituted by Christ as a Sacrament. Therefore, this indicates that any Christian marriage should reflect the mind of Christ. Above all, Christian marriage is indissoluble, and is guided by conjugal love. For this reason, it is important for yet to be Christian spouses to be fully and adequately instructed to the teachings of the Church.

Married Christian couples publicly agreed before the church to remain husband and wife for better or for worse, to remain faithful, and above all to love each other as Christ loves His Church. In marriage, two partners become one flesh, a concept that is predicated by love. The couples ought to love each other in Christ-like love. This love is boundless; it was for the love Christ had for the world that He was able to die for our sins. Christ remains the head of the Church, and He loves the church unconditionally. In a similar manner, the husband is considered the head of the family, and should love his wife and family unconditionally. However, the husband should not lord his headship over the wife, but must love and provide for the family. The husband should be prepared to give his entire life for his wife and children. He should work for them. However, this type of self-sacrifice can only be possible where conjugal love exists and prevails.

1.2          Objectives of the study

The aim of the study is to examine an examination of the causes and the aftermath effect of divorce on Christian. The specific objectives are:

  • To examine the effect of divorce in Christian home
  • To examine what causes divorce in Christian home
  • To examine the consequences of divorce in Christian home

1.3       Statement of the Problem

One of life’s most heartbreaking events is a divorce. Christians have unique difficulties in this area due to their belief that marriage is a holy bond between a man and a woman and God. Divorce has far-reaching negative effects on everyone involved, including the children and the community at large. There is a pressing need for more study into this topic and its implications for Christian relationships, despite the fact that we still know so little about it. Divorce is a concern because it may have a devastating effect on people’s mental health.

The Christian community at large is not immune to the effects of divorce. Divorcing members of the church body may feel abandoned and alone if the church fails to give enough assistance. People may be reluctant to ask for aid because they fear being judged or stigmatized for doing so. Christians who have been through a divorce may also feel unwelcome in their church communities, which can amplify existing feelings of guilt and isolation. The practice of remarriage has its own set of difficulties after a divorce. Many Christians hold the view that the Bible forbids remarriage until one spouse has died. For Christians who want to remarry but feel restricted by their faith, this might lead to difficult moral and ethical questions. Long-term effects on individuals and families can be caused by the legal and financial complications that arise during a divorce, such as the distribution of assets and debts.

Despite these obstacles, research regarding how divorce affects Christian couples is severely lacking. Further research is needed on the social and cultural effects of divorce as well as its psychological, emotional, and spiritual repercussions. Christian psychologists, psychiatrists, and counselors can be invaluable here because of their understanding of the special difficulties Christians confront when going through a divorce.

Divorce, to sum up, is a serious issue for Christian relationships. Individuals, their offspring, and the Christian society as a whole might suffer serious consequences as a result. More study is needed to learn how divorce affects Christian marriages so that people and communities can find effective ways to cope. Christians, with the correct community and tools, may better weather the storm of divorce on all fronts (emotional, spiritual, and relational).

1.4       Thesis Statement

This research critically examines the causes of divorce and its impact on Christian communities. The aim is to understand the underlying factors that lead to the dissolution of marriages within this religious group and to explore the subsequent effects on the individuals and the community as a whole. The research is divided into 5 chief chapters. The field work includes the use of oral interviews of some individuals, groups and pastorate of selected Churches in in Owode-Yewa Ogun State. Oral interview was conducted, some questions covering aspect of research topics were used for collecting information. Questionnaires were carefully selected to obtain the correct and right information.

  • What is the effect of divorce in Christian home?
  • What are the causes of divorce in Christian home?
  • What are the consequences of divorce in Christian home?

1.6       Significance of the study

The significance of studying the critical examination of causes of divorce and its effect on Christians is multi-faceted. Firstly, it provides a comprehensive understanding of the factors that contribute to the dissolution of marriages within the Christian community. This could range from financial issues, infidelity, lack of communication, to differences in personal beliefs and values. By identifying these causes, the study can provide insights into the common triggers of marital breakdowns, which can be used to develop preventive measures or solutions.

Secondly, the study can shed light on the impact of divorce on the Christian faith. Divorce can lead to a crisis of faith for some individuals, as it may conflict with their religious beliefs and values. Understanding this impact can help religious leaders and counselors provide better support to individuals going through a divorce, ensuring they do not lose their faith in the process.

Thirdly, the study can also highlight the societal implications of divorce within the Christian community. It can reveal how divorce affects the social fabric of the community, including the well-being of children, the economic status of the individuals involved, and the overall harmony within the community. This knowledge can be used to develop strategies to mitigate these effects and maintain social cohesion.

Fourthly, the study can contribute to the broader discourse on marriage and divorce in society. It can provide a Christian perspective on these issues, enriching the diversity of viewpoints and promoting a more inclusive dialogue. This can lead to a better understanding and respect for different beliefs and practices, fostering tolerance and coexistence.

Fifthly, the study can inform policy-making within the church. By understanding the causes and effects of divorce, church leaders can make informed decisions about marriage counseling programs, divorce support groups, and other relevant policies. This can help the church respond more effectively to the needs of its members and uphold its role as a source of spiritual guidance and support.

Lastly, the study can serve as a valuable resource for academic research. It can add to the body of knowledge on marriage, divorce, and religion, providing a basis for further studies. This can lead to new theories, models, and frameworks that can enhance our understanding of these complex phenomena.

1.7       Research Hypotheses

The research hypotheses are buttressed below:

  • There is no significant effect of divorce in Christian home
  • There is no significant effect of causes of divorce in Christian home
  • There is no significant effect of consequences of divorce in Christian home.

1.8      Scope and Limitation of the study

The study examines an examination of the causes and the aftermath effect of divorce on Christian HomeIn Owode-Yewa Ogun State. The study is restricted to Selected Churches in Owode-Yewa Ogun State.

In the process of this research, many challenges confronted the researcher as constraints toward the achievement of this work, the constraints include but not limited to:

  1. Some questionnaires were not return to the researcher
  2. Language barrier is a big challenge because some respondents were unable to interpret the question correctly
  3. Some individual refused to answer the questions correctly in order to keep their secret.
  4. Some respondents choose to ignore completely

In spite of all these limitations, the researcher tried to produce  a valuable project.

1.7       Operational Delimitation of the study

Cause: Cause is a term that refers to the reason or set of reasons that lead to a particular event or situation. In the context of this study, it would refer to the factors that lead to divorce.

 Divorce: Divorce is the legal dissolution of a marriage by a court or other competent body. It is the termination of a marital union, the canceling and/or reorganizing of the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage, thus dissolving the bonds of matrimony between a married couple.

Christian: Christian is a term that refers to a person who follows or adheres to Christianity, a monotheistic Abrahamic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians believe in the Holy Bible as the word of God and follow its teachings.

Christian Home: A Christian Home refers to a household where the principles, teachings, and values of Christianity are upheld and practiced. It is a place where family members, guided by their Christian faith, strive to live in harmony, love, and respect for each other.

Church: The Church in a Christian context, refers to the whole community of Christians, the body of people who adhere to the faith. It can also refer to a physical building where Christians gather for worship, fellowship, and religious activities. The Church plays a significant role in the spiritual guidance and moral direction of its members.
