Every company has Managing director, chief executive officer, manager,          board chairman or leader, we must agree that someone needs to head our   business and social institutions. The leader of any organization expectedly completes his role which is given by communicating the values of the organization he or she represents.

Leadership skills are required by a manager to operate effectively at a strategic level and successful manager will be able to identify personal skills to achieve strategic ambitious where he will able to evaluate the effectiveness of the leadership plan and promote healthy and safe environment that support a culture of quality. Leadership implies exercise of power , authority resources management and control in an organization. Leaders involves influencing the activities of an individual of group in order to reach a goal in a given situation.

Researchers have devoted time and effort to the study of various leadership roles, models and theories that could be adopted by leaders of institutions or organization for effective running of their organization. Organizations are set up for the specific purpose of profit maximization the attainment of this purpose depends largely on the effectiveness of the leader of such organization.


There are problems of ineffective leadership style in federal polytechnic Bida as evident by incessant strike embarked upon by all unions in the polytechnic community.


The world-wideness of these project in its effort to look at the following objective of the study.

  1. To show the important of leadership effectiveness to tertiary institution.
  2. To improve the need for effective style of leadership and which is one of the best fit the situation factors.
  3. To study the characteristics of a good leadership
  4. To examine the characteristics of a good leadership
  5. To highlight the crucial variables influencing leadership effectiveness and expose leadership made of administration.


The following question are formulated.

  1. Does leadership enhance effectiveness and organizational productivity.
  2. Is the significant relationship between leadership modes of administration and the profit or loss made by the organization?
  3. Is leadership role use in the organization effective and efficient.


The main importance or the study is to find how leader can be effective and organizationally productive in tertiary institutions. A leader can be effective by his    nature and qualities because leaders are born and not made.

It is important tool which determines to greater extent the fortunes of many organizations in various ways.

Therefore, it stands as a reason that this research attempt to look into tertiary institution would be of greater benefit to managers of organizational resources.


Some of the limitation of the research work are:

  1. Time factor
  2. Inadequate finance
  3. Inadequate response

Time factor: these is where by a leader or manager lacks efficient or adequate time to perform more effectively in a organization for achieve goals.


In view of the above limitations, the research work was restricted to    leadership effectiveness and organizational productivity in Niger State Polytechnic Bida [campus].


The following key terms will be encountered throughout the research; leader, leadership, effectiveness, efficiency, organization, productivity, tertiary institution.

  1. Leader: A leader is a person that has the ability to influence others in order to achieve individual or organizational goals. It is an influence, and it is done by keeping on it unconsciously to attain certain goals.
  2. Leadership: This is an interpersonal influence exercised in a situation and directed through the communication process towards the attainment of specific goals. It is a particular type of a power relationship characterized by a group member’s perception that another group member has the right to prescribe behavior pattern for the former regarding his activities as a group member. Leadership involves influencing the activities of an individual or a group to reach a goal in a given situation.
  3. Effectiveness: This means doing the right thing. This is the capacity and competence in the execution manner.
  4. Efficiency: This means doing the right thing well. This objective puts cost into consideration in the attainment of goals. It is the attainment of set objective with minimum cost.
  5. Organization: This is the coming together of individuals or group of individuals to form a colony called an organization. This is a situation whereby people come together to work in order to achieve both individual organizational goals.
  6. Productivity: This is the amount of work turned out by a worker or [a machine] per unit of time. This is the determination of the amount, ability and effectiveness of human efforts required any job or activity.
  7. Tertiary Institution: This is an institution that provides education for people of age 16 and above.
