CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

Immersive strategies have been widely recognized as effective tools in enhancing the development of reading skills. According to Kuhn et al. (2010), immersion in reading activities can significantly improve students’ reading comprehension and fluency. The authors argue that immersion strategies, such as extensive reading and interactive reading activities, can provide learners with a rich and meaningful context, which can facilitate their understanding of the text. This is supported by Krashen’s (1982) Input Hypothesis, which posits that learners acquire language skills when they are exposed to comprehensible input that is slightly beyond their current level of proficiency.

Moreover, immersion strategies can also foster learners’ motivation and engagement in reading. Guthrie et al. (2004) found that students who are immersed in reading activities tend to show higher levels of intrinsic motivation towards reading. This is because immersion strategies often involve tasks that are relevant and interesting to the learners, which can enhance their enjoyment and interest in reading. Furthermore, the interactive nature of immersion strategies can also promote learners’ active engagement in the reading process, which can further enhance their reading skills (Gambrell, 2011).

However, the effectiveness of immersion strategies can be influenced by various factors. For instance, the quality of the reading materials and the learners’ prior knowledge can significantly affect the outcomes of immersion strategies (Grabe, 2009). Therefore, it is crucial for educators to carefully select reading materials that are appropriate for the learners’ level and interests. Additionally, educators should also provide learners with necessary support and guidance to help them effectively engage in immersion activities.

Despite the potential benefits of immersion strategies, some challenges need to be addressed. One of the main challenges is the lack of resources and time for implementing immersion strategies in the classroom (Cummins, 2007). To overcome this challenge, educators can integrate technology into their teaching practices. For example, digital reading platforms can provide learners with a wide range of reading materials and interactive reading activities, which can facilitate their immersion in reading (Larson, 2010).

Immersion strategies can be effective in enhancing the development of reading skills. However, to maximize the benefits of these strategies, it is important for educators to consider the learners’ needs and interests, provide appropriate support and guidance, and utilize technology to facilitate immersion in reading.

  • Statement of the Problem

The problem of literacy development in Cameroon is a pressing issue that requires immediate attention. Despite the implementation of various strategies, the reading skills of students in Cameroon remain subpar (UNESCO, 2018). The primary concern is whether immersion strategies can significantly impact the development of reading skills in this context.

The current educational system in Cameroon, despite its efforts, has not been successful in achieving a high literacy rate. According to the World Bank (2019), the literacy rate in Cameroon is only 75%, which is significantly lower than the global average. This indicates a problem in the strategies currently employed to develop reading skills.

The use of immersion strategies in teaching reading skills has been successful in other contexts (Cummins, 2000). However, there is a lack of research on the effectiveness of these strategies in the Cameroonian context. This gap in the literature presents a problem as it hinders the development of effective strategies for improving reading skills in Cameroon.

Furthermore, the socio-cultural context of Cameroon, with its multilingual setting, presents unique challenges to the implementation of immersion strategies (Bamgbose, 2000). The effectiveness of these strategies in such a context is yet to be determined, presenting another aspect of the problem.

The lack of resources and trained teachers to implement immersion strategies is another problem (UNICEF, 2017). Without adequate resources and trained personnel, the implementation of immersion strategies may not yield the desired results.

The problem lies in the lack of research on the effectiveness of immersion strategies in the Cameroonian context, the unique challenges presented by the socio-cultural context, and the lack of resources and trained personnel to implement these strategies. This problem needs to be addressed to improve the reading skills of students in Cameroon.

1.6 Significance of the Study

The significance of the study on strategies for immersion and its impact on the development of reading skills is profound. Immersion strategies are teaching methods that involve immersing students in a learning environment where instruction is performed in a target language. This approach is often used in language learning but can also be applied to reading skills development. The study aims to understand how these strategies can enhance the reading abilities of learners, which is a critical skill in the 21st century.

The first significant aspect of this study is its potential to improve literacy rates. Reading is a fundamental skill that affects all areas of learning. By understanding how immersion strategies can enhance reading skills, educators can develop more effective teaching methods. This could lead to improved literacy rates, which in turn can have a positive impact on other areas of learning and overall educational achievement.

Secondly, the study can provide insights into how immersion strategies can be used to cater to different learning styles. Not all students learn in the same way, and traditional teaching methods may not be effective for everyone. Immersion strategies can provide a more engaging and interactive learning experience, which can be particularly beneficial for visual and kinesthetic learners. This can lead to improved reading comprehension and retention.

Thirdly, the study can contribute to the field of educational psychology by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of immersion strategies in reading skills development. This can help to validate or challenge existing theories and models, leading to a more nuanced understanding of how learning occurs. This can also inform the development of new theories and models that better reflect the realities of learning in the 21st century.

Fourthly, the study can have practical implications for policy-making in education. If immersion strategies are found to be effective in enhancing reading skills, this could influence educational policies and practices. For example, schools may be encouraged to incorporate immersion strategies into their curriculum, or teacher training programs may include modules on how to implement these strategies in the classroom.

Lastly, the study can have a broader societal impact. Reading skills are not only important for academic success, but also for functioning in society. Individuals with strong reading skills are more likely to be informed and active citizens. By improving reading skills through immersion strategies, we can contribute to a more literate, informed, and engaged society.
