CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

The influence of instructional materials on the academic performance of junior secondary students studying French Language in Nigeria has been a subject of considerable research. According to Aina (2013), instructional materials play a significant role in enhancing the teaching and learning process. The study found that the use of instructional materials in teaching French Language in Nigerian schools significantly improved students’ understanding and retention of the subject matter. Furthermore, the problem is not just about the availability of instructional materials, but also their quality and appropriateness. Many of the instructional materials used in teaching French in Nigerian schools are not contextually relevant, making it difficult for students to relate the lessons to their immediate environment (Omoogun, 2013). This disconnect can negatively impact students’ understanding and retention of the subject matter.

The issue is further complicated by the lack of training and support for teachers in the use of these instructional materials. The problem of the influence of instructional materials on the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Nigeria is a complex issue that requires a comprehensive approach. It involves addressing the quality and relevance of instructional materials, enhancing teacher competence in their use, and conducting more context-specific research to provide empirical evidence on the issue (Ogunyinka, 2015).

  • Aim and Objectives of the Study

The study examines the influence of instructional materials on academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Agege LGA. The specific objectives of the study are:

  1. To examine the extent to which the use of instructional materials influences the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Nigeria.
  2. To identify the types of instructional materials that are most effective in improving the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language.
  3. To assess the availability and accessibility of instructional materials for teaching French Language in junior secondary schools in Nigeria.
  4. To investigate the teachers’ perception of the importance of instructional materials in teaching French Language to junior secondary students.

The research questions for the study are stated below:

  1. To what extent does the use of instructional materials influence the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Nigeria?
  2. What types of instructional materials are most effective in improving the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language?
  3. How available and accessible are instructional materials for teaching French Language in junior secondary schools in Nigeria?
  4. What are the teachers’ perceptions of the importance of instructional materials in teaching French Language to junior secondary students?

 

  • Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement for the study is buttressed below:

Ho: The use of instructional materials has no significant influence on the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Nigeria.

H1: The use of instructional materials has significant influence on the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Nigeria.

 

  • Significance of the Study

The significance of the study on the influence of instructional materials on the academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Lagos is manifold. Firstly, it provides an in-depth understanding of the role instructional materials play in enhancing students’ comprehension and performance in French Language. This is particularly important in a multilingual country like Nigeria where French is a second language for many students, and effective teaching methods are crucial for language acquisition.

This study could serve as a valuable resource for educators and policy makers in Lagos and beyond. By improving language education, we could therefore contribute to the broader development goals of Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.

  • Scope of the Study

The study examines the influence of instructional materials on academic performance of junior secondary students in French Language in Agege LGA, Lagos. The study is restricted to Agege, Lagos.

  • Operational Definition of Terms
  1. Influence: This refers to the capacity to have an effect on someone’s character, development, or behavior. It’s the power to shape outcomes or inspire change in actions, opinions, or decisions.
  2. Instructional Materials: These are tools used in educational lessons, which include active learning and assessment. They can be printed or digital resources like books, handouts, slides, videos, or games that help students understand and apply concepts taught.
  3. Academic Performance: This term refers to how well a student is accomplishing his or her tasks and studies. It’s often measured by grades or GPA on a scale from failing to excellent.
  4. Junior Secondary Students: These are students who are in the middle level of secondary education, often referred to as middle school or junior high school in some countries. The age range is typically from 12 to 15 years old.
  5. French Language: This is a Romance language, descended from Latin, and is an official language in 29 countries. It’s widely taught as a second or third language.
  6. School: This is an institution designed for the teaching of students under the direction of teachers. It provides a structured curriculum and environment where students learn academic and life skills.
