CHAPTER ONE

1.1    INTRODUCTION

The role of the Internet in distance learning education has been a topic of significant interest in recent years. According to Al-Fraihat, Joy, Masa’deh, and Sinclair (2020), the Internet has revolutionized the way education is delivered, making it possible for learners to access educational resources from anywhere in the world. The authors argue that the Internet has made distance learning more interactive, engaging, and learner-centered. They also note that the Internet has facilitated the development of various learning platforms that support distance learning.

In a study by Al-Rahmi, Alias, Othman, Marin, and Tur (2018), the authors found that the Internet has significantly improved the quality of distance learning education. They argue that the Internet has made it possible for learners to access a wide range of educational resources, including e-books, online journals, and educational videos. This has not only enriched the learning experience but also made education more accessible to people who would otherwise not have access to such resources.

However, the role of the Internet in distance learning education is not without challenges. According to a study by Alqurashi (2016), one of the main challenges is the digital divide, which refers to the gap between those who have access to the Internet and those who do not. The author argues that this divide can limit the effectiveness of distance learning education, especially in developing countries where access to the Internet is still a challenge.

In addition, the Internet can also pose security and privacy risks. According to a study by Aljawarneh, Alrashdan, Alkhader, and Alaboodi (2020), the use of the Internet in distance learning education can expose learners to various security threats, including identity theft, cyberbullying, and data breaches. The authors argue that these risks can undermine the effectiveness of distance learning education and discourage learners from using online learning platforms.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The role of the Internet in distance learning education is a critical issue that has gained significant attention in recent years. The problem lies in the fact that while the Internet has made distance learning more accessible and convenient, it has also brought about a set of unique challenges. These challenges include issues related to the quality of education, student engagement, and the digital divide.

The quality of education in distance learning is a major concern. The Internet has made it possible for anyone to create and distribute educational content, leading to a proliferation of online courses. However, not all of these courses meet the standards of quality education. The lack of face-to-face interaction and the impersonal nature of online learning can also affect the quality of education (Moore, 2013).

Student engagement is another significant problem. While the Internet provides a platform for interactive learning, many students struggle to stay engaged in online courses. The lack of physical presence and direct interaction with teachers and peers can lead to feelings of isolation and disengagement (Bolliger & Halupa, 2012).

The digital divide is a further issue. While the Internet has made distance learning more accessible, not everyone has equal access to the Internet. This digital divide can lead to disparities in educational opportunities and outcomes (Czerniewicz, 2018).

Moreover, the role of the Internet in distance learning education is not fully understood. There is a need for more research to understand how the Internet can be used effectively in distance learning to improve the quality of education, enhance student engagement, and bridge the digital divide.

Lastly, the rapid advancement of technology and the increasing reliance on the Internet for distance learning education necessitate continuous evaluation and adaptation of online learning strategies. The problem is not only to understand the current role of the Internet in distance learning but also to anticipate its future role and prepare for it.
