CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

Church administration in Nigeria has been a topic of interest for many scholars and researchers. It is a complex and multifaceted subject that encompasses various aspects such as leadership, governance, financial management, and pastoral care. A seminal work in this field is Ayegboyin’s (2008) “Church Administration in Nigeria: A Historical Perspective,” which provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of church administration in Nigeria from the colonial era to the present day. The author argues that the administrative structures of Nigerian churches have been significantly influenced by the socio-political context of the country.

In the realm of leadership, Akinade (2010) in his work “Leadership and Conflict in African Churches: The Anglican Experience,” explores the leadership styles prevalent in Nigerian churches and their impact on church administration. He posits that the autocratic and hierarchical leadership styles often seen in Nigerian churches can lead to conflicts and administrative challenges. This perspective is echoed by Ojo (2006) in his study “Pentecostal Movements in Nigeria,” where he discusses how charismatic leadership can sometimes result in administrative inefficiencies.

Financial management is another critical aspect of church administration. In his study, “Financial Accountability in the Nigerian Church,” Ogunleye (2012) examines the financial practices of Nigerian churches. He argues that there is a need for greater transparency and accountability in the financial management of churches to ensure their sustainability and credibility. This view is supported by Adebayo (2014) in his research “Financial Management in the Church: A Study of the Redeemed Christian Church of God,” where he highlights the importance of sound financial management in church administration.

Pastoral care is a vital component of church administration. In his work “Pastoral Care in the African Context,” Ademiluka (2015) discusses the role of pastoral care in Nigerian churches. He emphasizes the need for pastors to be adequately trained in pastoral care to effectively meet the spiritual and emotional needs of their congregations. This perspective is reinforced by Omenka (2013) in his study “Pastoral Care and Counseling in Africa,” where he explores the challenges and opportunities of pastoral care in the Nigerian context.

Church administration in Nigeria is a multifaceted and complex subject that requires further research. The existing literature provides valuable insights into the various aspects of church administration, including leadership, financial management, and pastoral care. However, there is a need for more empirical studies to better understand the unique challenges and opportunities of church administration in the Nigerian context.

  • Statement of the Problem

Church administration in Nigeria has been a subject of concern for many researchers and scholars due to the various challenges it faces. The first problem is the lack of proper administrative structures in many churches (Adeyemo, 2012). This lack of structure often leads to mismanagement of resources and conflicts among church members.

The second issue is the lack of adequate training for church administrators. According to Ogbu (2015), many church administrators in Nigeria lack the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively manage church resources. This lack of training often results in poor decision-making and inefficient use of resources.

The third problem is corruption. A study by Okon (2017) revealed that corruption is prevalent in many Nigerian churches. This corruption often manifests in the form of embezzlement of church funds, nepotism, and favoritism. This not only undermines the integrity of the church but also hampers its growth and development.

The fourth issue is the lack of accountability and transparency in many Nigerian churches. According to Adebayo (2018), many churches in Nigeria do not have systems in place to ensure accountability and transparency in their operations. This often leads to misuse of church funds and resources.

The fifth problem is the influence of tribalism and ethnicity on church administration. A study by Ihejirika (2019) found that tribalism and ethnicity often influence the appointment of church administrators in Nigeria. This often leads to divisions and conflicts among church members.

Lastly, the issue of succession planning in Nigerian churches is a significant problem. According to Eze (2020), many Nigerian churches do not have clear succession plans. This often leads to leadership crises when a church leader dies or retires.

  • Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine Church Administration.  A case study of GOFAMINT Church and Redeemed Christian Church of God.  The specific objectives of the study are:

  1. To understand the administrative structure and governance of GOFAMINT Church and Redeemed Christian Church of God, and how it influences their operations and growth.
  2. To examine the role of leadership in the effective administration of these churches.
  3. To evaluate the financial management practices within GOFAMINT Church and Redeemed Christian Church of God.
  4. To assess the impact of church administration on member engagement and participation.
  • Research Questions

The research questions are stated below:

  1. What is the administrative structure and governance of GOFAMINT Church and Redeemed Christian Church of God, and how does it influence their operations and growth?
  2. What role does leadership play in the effective administration of GOFAMINT Church and Redeemed Christian Church of God?
  3. How are the financial management practices within GOFAMINT Church and Redeemed Christian Church of God evaluated?
  4. What is the impact of church administration on member engagement and participation in GOFAMINT Church and Redeemed Christian Church of God?
  • Significance of the Study

The significance of this study lies in its potential to shed light on the administrative structure and governance of two prominent churches, GOFAMINT Church and Redeemed Christian Church of God. By understanding the intricacies of their administration, we can gain insights into how these churches operate and grow. This knowledge can be beneficial for other religious organizations seeking to improve their administrative practices and for scholars interested in the study of religious institutions.

Furthermore, this study aims to examine the role of leadership in the effective administration of these churches. Leadership plays a crucial role in any organization, and churches are no exception. By studying the leadership styles and strategies employed by these churches, we can better understand how leadership influences the functioning and growth of religious organizations.

Another significant aspect of this study is its focus on the financial management practices within GOFAMINT Church and Redeemed Christian Church of God. Financial management is a critical aspect of any organization’s success, and churches are no different. By evaluating their financial management practices, we can gain insights into how these churches manage their resources and how this impacts their operations and growth.

The study also seeks to assess the impact of church administration on member engagement and participation. Member engagement and participation are vital for the growth and success of any church. By understanding how administrative practices influence member engagement, we can provide valuable insights for other churches seeking to improve member participation.

The findings of this study could also have broader implications for the study of religious organizations. By providing a detailed case study of two prominent churches, this research could contribute to a deeper understanding of how religious organizations function and grow. This could be beneficial for scholars in fields such as sociology, religious studies, and organizational studies.

Lastly, this study could also have practical implications for the churches themselves. By identifying strengths and areas for improvement in their administrative practices, these churches could use the findings of this study to enhance their operations, improve member engagement, and facilitate growth.
