CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Background to the Study

The influence of laboratory facilities on students’ academic performance in biology among senior secondary school students in Nigeria has been a subject of interest for many researchers. According to a study by Okebukola (1997), the availability and utilization of laboratory facilities have a significant impact on students’ performance in biology. The study found that students who had access to well-equipped laboratories performed better than those who did not. This is because laboratories provide a hands-on learning experience, which enhances understanding and retention of biological concepts.

In a similar vein, a study by Ajewole (1999) found that the use of laboratory facilities significantly improved students’ performance in biology. The study revealed that students performed better in schools where laboratory facilities were not only available but also effectively utilized. This implies that the presence of laboratory facilities without proper utilization may not significantly impact students’ performance.

A study by Ezeudu (2013) found that inadequate funding, lack of trained laboratory personnel, and poor maintenance culture are some of the challenges hindering the effective utilization of laboratory facilities in Nigerian schools. These challenges, if not addressed, could undermine the potential benefits of laboratory facilities on students’ performance.

  • Statement of the Problem

The problem of the influence of laboratory facilities on students’ academic performance in biology among senior secondary school students in Nigeria is a significant one. According to Aina (2013), the lack of adequate laboratory facilities in many Nigerian schools has been a major hindrance to effective teaching and learning of biology. This is because practical biology, which is best taught in a well-equipped laboratory, forms a significant part of the biology curriculum in senior secondary schools.

The laboratory is a crucial component of biology education as it provides students with the opportunity to interact directly with the material world (Hofstein & Lunetta, 2004). However, in many Nigerian schools, the laboratories are either non-existent or poorly equipped, thereby limiting the students’ ability to gain practical knowledge and skills. This lack of practical exposure can negatively impact students’ understanding of the subject and their overall academic performance (Aina, 2013).

Furthermore, a study by Okebukola (2007) found a positive correlation between the availability of laboratory facilities and students’ performance in biology. The study revealed that students who had access to well-equipped laboratories performed better in biology than those who did not. This suggests that the lack of adequate laboratory facilities in Nigerian schools could be a significant factor contributing to the poor performance of students in biology.

Moreover, the lack of laboratory facilities also affects the teaching methods employed by biology teachers. According to Abimbola (2011), many biology teachers in Nigeria resort to theoretical teaching due to the lack of laboratory facilities. This teaching method, however, is not effective for a practical subject like biology, which requires hands-on experience for better understanding.

In addition, the lack of laboratory facilities also affects students’ interest and motivation to learn biology. According to a study by Adebayo (2015), students are more likely to be interested in biology and motivated to learn when they have the opportunity to perform practical experiments in a well-equipped laboratory. Therefore, the lack of laboratory facilities in Nigerian schools could be demotivating students and affecting their interest in biology.

The lack of adequate laboratory facilities in Nigerian schools is a significant problem that needs to be addressed. It not only affects students’ understanding of biology and their academic performance but also their interest and motivation to learn. Therefore, there is a need for stakeholders in the education sector to invest in the provision of adequate laboratory facilities in schools to enhance the teaching and learning of biology.

  • Aim and Objectives of the Study

The aim of the study is to examine the influence of laboratory facilities on students’ academic performance in biology among senior secondary school students in Ondo West Local Government in Ondo State. The specific objectives of the study are:

  1. To determine the extent to which the availability of laboratory facilities influences students’ academic performance in biology.
  2. To examine the correlation between the quality of laboratory facilities and the students’ understanding of biology concepts.
  3. To assess the impact of practical laboratory sessions on students’ interest and engagement in biology.
  4. To evaluate the role of laboratory facilities in enhancing students’ practical skills and their application of theoretical knowledge in biology.
  • Research Questions

The research questions are buttressed below:

  1. How does the availability of laboratory facilities influence students’ academic performance in biology?
  2. Is there a correlation between the quality of laboratory facilities and the students’ understanding of biology concepts?
  3. What is the impact of practical laboratory sessions on students’ interest and engagement in biology?
  4. How do laboratory facilities enhance students’ practical skills and their application of theoretical knowledge in biology?

 Research Hypothesis

The hypothetical statement of the study is buttressed below:

Ho: Availability of laboratory facilities will not influence students’ academic performance in Biology.

H1: Availability of laboratory facilities will influence students’ academic performance in Biology

The study on the influence of laboratory facilities on students’ academic performance in biology among senior secondary school students is of great importance. It provides an in-depth understanding of the role that laboratory facilities play in shaping students’ academic performance. The laboratory is a crucial component of biology education, as it offers a practical approach to learning, which complements theoretical knowledge.

This study is significant as it could potentially highlight the correlation between the quality of laboratory facilities and students’ understanding of biology concepts.   • Scope of the Study

The study examines influence of laboratory facilities on students’ academic performance in biology among senior secondary school students in Ondo West Local Government in Ondo State. The study is restricted to selected secondary school students in Ondo West Local Government in Ondo State.

  • Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Influence: The capacity to have an effect on someone’s character, development, or behavior. In this context, it refers to how laboratory facilities can affect students’ academic performance.
  2. Laboratory Facilities: These are spaces equipped with the necessary tools, equipment, and materials needed for scientific experiments, research, and teaching. In a school setting, these facilities are crucial for practical learning, especially in subjects like biology.
  3. Student: A person who is actively engaged in learning, typically within an educational institution such as a school or university. In this context, it refers to those studying biology at the senior secondary school level.
  4. Academic Performance: This refers to how well a student is accomplishing their tasks and studies. In this context, it’s about the students’ performance in biology, which can be measured through grades, understanding of the subject, and ability to apply the knowledge.
  5. Biology: This is a natural science that studies life and living organisms, including their physical structure, chemical processes, molecular interactions, physiological mechanisms, development, and evolution.
  6. A School: An institution designed for the teaching of students under the direction of teachers. In this context, it refers to a senior secondary school where students are learning biology.
