CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1.   Background to the Study

The spread of the gospel has been crucial to the expansion of churches in Nigeria. It’s a strategy to get more people to listen to the gospel and become Christians. Several studies have looked at how different types of evangelism have affected the expansion of churches in Nigeria. Ojo (2015) did research on the correlation between various methods of evangelism and the expansion of local churches. Personal evangelism and community outreach initiatives were shown to be particularly effective in the study’s analysis of methods for growing churches and gaining new members.

In particular, the importance of evangelism in the expansion of Nigeria’s Pentecostal churches was the subject of Akinboye’s (2017) research. Charismatic preaching, healing services, and deliverance ministries were all emphasized as key to bringing in new members and spreading the church’s impact in the research.

The effect of evangelism on the expansion of churches in Nigeria was the subject of a second research by Adeyemi (2019). The study highlighted the need of preparing church members with the proper training and tools for evangelistic activity. It also emphasized the significance of digital tools, such as social media and websites, in expanding the church’s influence.

The impact of evangelism on church development in Nigeria is explored in these studies. Nonetheless, it should be noted that further study and context-specific studies may be required to completely comprehend the dynamics and complexities of this connection.

 1.2   Statement of the Problem

Lack of adequate data and study on the issue is one of the key obstacles in assessing the impact of evangelism on church development in Nigeria. While there have been some studies on the effects of evangelism in Nigeria, more thorough investigation into the elements that lead to church expansion through evangelism is necessary.

The widespread religious variety in Nigeria is another pressing problem that must be solved. Nigeria is home to many different faiths, including Christian, Muslim, and indigenous African practices. Because of this variety, evangelism efforts face new difficulties in reaching people who may respond differently to the gospel depending on which religious group they belong to.

Additionally, socio-cultural issues may also affect the impact of evangelism on church expansion in Nigeria. Nigeria is a country with a diverse population and a long history of cultural achievements. All of these things have the potential to affect how various groups and individuals respond to and understand evangelism. The success or failure of evangelistic attempts in Nigeria must be evaluated taking these social and cultural factors into account.

How churches and evangelists in Nigeria go about their work may also have an impact on the success of their efforts to expand the Christian community there. The success of various evangelistic strategies employed by various congregations and preachers might be hard to generalize. Researching and assessing these tactics for their effect on church expansion is crucial.

Overall, the impact of evangelism on church expansion in Nigeria is a nuanced and intricate topic. It calls for deep investigation, analysis of facts, and an awareness of the underlying sociocultural processes. These obstacles must be overcome and in-depth research conducted if we are to learn anything useful about the success of evangelism in Nigeria and how to improve church development as a result of evangelism.

 1.6   Significance of the Study

There are several reasons why it’s important to examine the impact of evangelism on church development in Nigeria. To begin, Nigeria has a sizable Christian population, so any research into the effect of evangelism on church growth would be useful for both pastors and politicians. Furthermore, Nigeria is home to many distinct ethnic and cultural communities, all of which have their own unique religious traditions. Examining evangelism’s success in this setting can help us better understand the dynamics of religious conversion and the elements that lead to the expansion of churches.

Studying the impact of evangelism on church development in Nigeria also has real-world applications for religious groups and individuals who are actively engaged in evangelization. Churches can maximize their efforts and resource allocation if they can determine which techniques and approaches are most productive. This has the potential to boost participation, community involvement, and overall societal effect.

The study of evangelism’s impact on church expansion in Nigeria also has implications for the study of religion more generally. Understanding the dynamics of religious conversion and the reasons that impact people’s decisions to join or leave religious organizations, as well as the role evangelism plays in constructing religious landscapes, may be gained through this study. Scholars and academics can benefit from this information, but so can religious leaders who want to better satisfy the needs and expectations of their followers.

Studying the impact of evangelism on church development in Nigeria is important because it can provide useful information to church leaders, politicians, and evangelists. It has the potential to advance the study of religion, aid the formation of religious groups in Nigeria, and give useful insights for improving evangelistic efforts.
