CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.0 Background to the Study

According to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2018), family planning is defined as “the ability of individuals and couples to anticipate and attain their desired number of children and the spacing and timing of their births. It is achieved through use of contraceptive methods and the treatment of involuntary infertility” (WHO, 2018).

Giving birth is something in which man-kind and animals are equal but rearing the young especially educating them is something which is unique gift and responsibility of man. For this reason it is important for human beings to put emphasis on caring for children and ability to look after them properly rather than thinking only about the number of children and ability to give birth Awake, (2013).

Family planning saves the lives of children by helping women space births. Between 13 and 15 million children under the age five die each year, if all children were born at least two years apart, three to four million of these deaths would be avoided. Family planning helps men and women care for their families. Men around the world say  that  planning  their  families  help  them  to  provide  a  better  life  for  their  families,  it  improves  family  wellbeing,  couples  with  fewer  children  are  better  able  to  provide  them  with  enough  food,  clothing,  housing and education(Awake, 2013).

Family  planning  helps  nation  develop,  in  countries  where  women  are  having  far  fewer  children  than  their mothers did. People’s economic situations are improving faster than in most other countries and if couples have fewer children in the future, the world’s current population of people will avoid doubling in less than 50 years. (Hatcher, Rinehart, Blackburn &Gelter, 1997).
