CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Getting resources to prepare for exam or general school work is a very important aspect of education and is particularly important for university student where they are in a research environment of which a lot of study has been done earlier in their field of study.

In the case of this project, the resources that would be provided on a platform would be past questions. Past questions go a long way to help students to prepare for examinations and these resources have been in the past, manually sourced. In this project, a software in form of an e-hub is designed and implemented for an ease of access and retrieval.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The project entails a study into the needs of students on campus and providing a solution to it.

The previous methods of getting resources like past questions was often in hard copy but this Project tries to digitalize the method of retrieval. The system would operate a model where which past questions are uploaded to a database and retrieved by interested students.

1.3 MOTIVATION OF THE STUDY

The study is motivated by the fact that there is no or very few if any, resource platforms to get resources like past questions. Usually, we have just resources online in the form of books which are good also but the past question resources are also helpful. This has motivated the creation of this e-hub.

1.4 AIMS OF THE STUDY

The aims of the study include:

  1. Designing an e-hub platform to upload and retrieve past questions resources.
  2. Help students to find very important resources for them to work with especially in times of examination preparation
  3. To create a centralized platform where records of educational material can be stored for posterity reasons.

1.5 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objectives of the study include:

  1. Taking a look of previous resources about studies about this kind of project.
  2. Exploring in detail various algorithms that can be used to develop a working project.

1.6 OUTLINE OF METHODOLOGY

The implementation of this idea and project was done with the user of the server-side programming language PHP and the MySQL database querying language. These languages were chosen for their server-side compatibility, their high level of security and for the general web compatibility. The front end technologies used include HTML, CSS and JavaScript. This will also be hosted as a web application on an online domain.

1.6 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

The study just focuses on a single university campus and the faculties on the campus. This is limited to just one campus because of the limited time available to undertake this project and also because of the cost of making it a project across universities/institution at this level.

1.7 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study bears significance in the sense that it can help at least better prepare students for examinations. It is an innovative idea that makes full use of the digital age to improve lives of students.

1.7 OPERATIONAL DEFINITION OF TERMS

  1. E-HUB: This is a commercial website that provides coordination and synchronization services to electronic commerce (ecommerce) its users or partners.
  2. PAST QUESTIONS: A past question is an examinationpaper from a previous year or previous years, usually used either for exam practice or for tests
  3. DATA UPLOAD: Data upload refers to the transmission of datafrom one computer system to another through means of a networ
  4. DATA RETRIEVAL: Data Retrieval is a process of identifying and extracting data from the database that is based on a query which is provided by the user. It allows the fetching of data from a database in order to display or use within an application.

1.9 ORGANISATION OF THE PROJECT

The project is organized such that; Chapter One gives a brief introduction in form of the Background of the Study of a general overview of the concept of educational resources. In Chapter Two, we have a broad look at the related implementations of online educational resource systems. Chapter Three examines the System Architecture, the system design and analysis. Chapter Four presents the implementation of the project using necessary programming languages and development models. It also presents the result of testing carried out. Chapter Five rounds off the project work with the summary, conclusions and recommendations for future works.
