CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     Background to the Study

The advancement in technologies and the fast place globalization has led to polytechnic students either partially or fully in an online environment (Laponite and Reisetter, 2008). Online learning presents not only challenges in course design but also opportunities to enhance acquire quick and accurate information. The value of online learning communities is supported by powerful learning theories, an active learning community and a sense of connectedness to other are critical to real learning (Lapoint and Reisetter, 2008).

The recent growth in computer networks and more specifically, the World Wide Web (WWW) has given rise to communication, socialization and interaction between individuals via the internet. The internet is being used for several purpose these days ranging from education, business and so on, one major area that focus on information dissemination on website.

Informative website is a platform where people can get useful and accurate information. Also, depending on the access level of a user and or the page setup, posted information might need to be approved by a moderate before it becomes visible.

This present era has been termed to be an information age, an age where the demand for information dramatically increase, it has been the most useful place for getting information nowadays, the use of search engine is one of the most useful, the internet is not just used for getting information nowadays, the use of search engines is one of the most useful way, this has led to the development of several software’s an applications ranging from the development of Website and online communities. Some of these communities and interaction applications are included with live chat, instant messaging forum and online calls information are sorted at every possible place, people are interested in sharing and obtaining feedback on their research or who are interested in studying website development. In a case of a learning community, there are ways in which information can be pass, one of such way is informative website which is our area of focus.

An informative website is a type of interactive web-site for providing useful information. A sense of website development often develops around website that have regular users; it is an instance of interactive web (Sylvia, 2007). This informative website can enhance campus based activities will be explored. For example, faculty learning communities and workshop that are supported through the learning could be supported and promoted through the website, exchange of expertise and services with other website.

Access to lecturers and tutors is vital to the learning process. Sadly, lecturers in the faculty can only be reached on a face to face basis. While this is probably the best way to interact with teachers, there is the problem of reaching lecturers when they are absent, or otherwise occupied. Phone numbers and e-mail addresses are only given to class representatives, with strict instructions to be used only when absolutely necessary – and rightly so. There is therefore the need for students to reach their lecturers when they are absent, occupied, or otherwise unreachable.

Information dissemination is also a vital part of learning, and in a higher institution of repute, such as this college of technology, the needs for effective information access cannot be over-emphasized. Sadly, the situation in the college presently does very little to address this issue – information concerning the students, staff and events in the college are mostly transmitted through a mouth to mouth medium, and occasionally through social media by the students. The above-mentioned means are obviously inadequate, unreliable and ineffective, as the required information rarely gets disseminated on time, and when it occasionally does, is more often than not, fraught with inaccuracies, exaggerations, and occasionally, is completely false. The available medium (being the college site – www.oscotechesaoke.edu.ng) intended for dissemination of information is hardly used, and when they are, are not acknowledged by the students because of unreliability, and lack of awareness by the students.

1.2       Statement of the Problem

In recent time the request for this knowledge has risen drastically, surfing or browsing the web without direction for information is becoming stressful especially using search engines. Also getting information in a campus based community, especially when carrying out research; it can be stressful and expensive. Due to busy schedules of lecturers they find it difficult passing information to students, students in turn also find it difficult to interact with them particularly to ask question and get ideas.

However, the way most threaded informative website works is that along with showing you the available articles, it will show you the relationship between articles are replies to other articles and which is the latest information. Hence, this work will address the following problems that exist in the current school forum system:

  1. Absence of an effective, accessible online forum for student-lecturer interaction.
  2. Lack of an effective means of information dissemination in the faculty.
  3. Lack of an effective and accessible file management system for students in case of document loss.

1.3     Aim and Objectives

The aim of this work is to develop an informative website for lecturers and students’ interaction in the faculty, as well as the management of the faculty.

The specific objectives of the work are to:

  1. Design an informative website application;
  2. Implement the designed informative website application in (i) above.

1.4     Methodology

The methods of study employed in this research are as follows:

  1. The establishment of a theoretical foundation for the research through a sound literature review of a few related works.
  2. A feasibility study, investigation and fact finding is carried out in the Faculty of Communication and Information Technology, OSCOTECH to get to extract a wealth of knowledge from the staff and students, which involves direct contact with the traditional or conventional approach to information management.
  3. Model design and implementation was based on PHP (for the Web scripting) and HTML, CSS & Bootstrap (for the User Interface design), and MySQL as the backend (database) component.
  4. The training of the would-be users through the use of user manual which explains every detail the user need to know

1.5    Motivation for Present Work

This work is motivated partly to provide a reliable, efficient and an effective informative website that would address some if not all of the shortcomings associated with manual method of information management in the faculty. Specifically, this work is necessitated to provide the following:

  1. A means of information dissemination that is timely, accurate and constantly updated and trusted by the students.
  2. A news page for all happenings in the faculty, and school at large.
  • A portal where students can upload their documents and download it back anytime.

1.6      Significance of the Study

This work will help in enhancing our knowledge about implementing an informative website it will improve the interaction between lecturers and students. This forum is developed in order to facilitate it users to establish network between one to many persons and maintain all people and faculty’s profile. It will also help to save time and energy when they want to share some kind of information, views, and ideas among others, to each other. It provides social communism so that people can information about the faculty even when they are at far distance. It will also help student to retrieve their documents easily in case of loss.

1.7       Scope of the Study

This work is limited to the development of an informative website for Faculty of Communication and Information Technology of Osun State College of Technology Esa-Oke, to overcome the shortcomings of the conventional model of information management. Model design and implementation was based on PHP (for the Web scripting) and HTML, CSS & Bootstrap (for the User Interface design), and MySQL as the backend (database) component.

1.8     Definition of Terms

The operational definition of terms used in the thesis are as stated below:

Online: connected via a computer attached to or available via a central computer network.

Offline: Disconnected from computer network, describe a computer terminal or peripheral devices disconnected from a computer network.

System: Set of computer components that is, an assembling of hardware, software and peripheral functioning together.

Databases: A systematically arranged collection of computer data, structured so that it can be automatically retrieved or manipulated. It is also called databank.

1.9     Report Organization

This report is divided into five chapters. In chapter one, a general introduction and background of the study is given, stating the problem, research motivations, objective, methodology, scope of the research and its significance. Chapter two presents the background concepts and review of relevant literature as well as the framework for an informative website. chapter three describes the technique adopted. Chapter four shows the results and discussion. Chapter five provides the conclusion and highlights the major contributions of the research.
