CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1     BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Employee performance refers to how your workers behave in the hotel and how well they perform the job duties you’ve obligated to them. Your company typically sets performance targets for individual employees and the hotel as a whole in hopes that your business offers good value to customers, minimizes waste and operates efficiently. For an individual employee, performance may refer to work effectiveness, quality and efficiency at the task level. Your receptionist, for example, may be expected to complete a certain quota of calls to potential leads per hour with a specific portion of those resulting in closed sales. On the other hand, a production worker may have performance requirements for product quality and hourly output. Individual performance affects your team and organizational performance. If you have employees who can’t keep up or who perform subpar work, this means that other workers may have to pick up the slack or that you have to have work redone. When employee performance is poor, you may not be able to satisfy your customers and thus see negative impacts on your profits, company reputation and sales. In addition to evaluating employee performance regularly, you’ll need an employee performance-improvement plan to respond to your findings. It helps to first identify why your employees do not meet performance expectations. Perhaps they lack proper training, motivation, morale or understanding of performance targets. Once you’ve identified the cause, it’s time to take action in the forms of offering additional training, implementing an effective reward system, improving the work environment, empowering your workers and using useful technologies. Measuring employee performance against your hotel production metrics involves aligning employee performance objectives with operational and strategic goals. By focusing on accomplishments rather than activity, you can improve your overall business and help your employees develop their careers. Determining which metrics your employees can affect also contributes to developing employee morale, loyalty and job satisfaction. During your employee’s performance review, ask him to demonstrate how he completes job tasks in an efficient and cost-effective manner, and how this helps your company achieve its competitive edge.

Hospitality means providing service to others, as well as demonstrating consistent excellence and quality. It should also mean profitably providing value at any price level, while demonstrating your own unique points of distinction. Most of all, hospitality should be a place where people can still be exceptional individuals and they can extend their own personality and style (Hogan, 2008). The hospitality industry is part of a huge group of companies known as travel and tourism industry, which provides the necessary or desirable goods and services to travelers. The hospitality and tourism industries are the largest and fastest-growing industries in the world (Walker, 2010).

Hospitality is the relationship between a guest and a host, where in the host receives the guest with goodwill, including the reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. Louis, chevalier de Jaucourt describes hospitality in the Encyclopedia as the virtue of a great soul that cares for the whole universe through the ties of humanity.  Hospitality is also the way people treat others, that is the service of welcoming receiving guests for example in hotels.

Equipment availability is a metric used to measure the percentage of time a machine can be used. It is the amount of time in which a machine actually runs and is available for production. Availability can also be called ‘uptime’, and it is one of the key metrics that give us insight into our production efficiency. Availability is what sets path for other factors, such as Performance and Quality. If you have machines with little availability and low production times, you will have less time and opportunities for high Performance and Quality.

Hotels equipment has gone beyond manual typewriter, ink, pot, local storage facilities etc. into more complicated and effective modern hotel equipment. Some hotels have embraced and purchase some of this equipment while others have not. In light of the above, the researcher decided to investigate the roles of equipment availability on employee’s performance.   In the early age, hotel activities which include paperwork were done manually with the use of machine such as manual typewriter etc. These later developed into new modern office equipment due to the disadvantage which includes noise, bulkiness, and lack of speed, waste of energy, time and resources.

Many organizations are being driven by the value systems of office equipment rather than its contribution to the organizations productivity.   In recent times, employees learn to operate new office equipment mainly through attending courses, trainings, workshop and seminars during which manufacturers will introduce their products and demonstrate by giving illustrations about their equipment to various operators.

The equipment has more from the traditional age to the modern age and therefore, there is need for the modern equipment to be available to the users. It is in this regard that the study is embarked on which is titled “An Assessment of the availability of the equipment and its effect on organization productivity.

1.2    STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The impact of Equipment Availability is of paramount importance to the employee performance of any hotel industry. However, there are some foreseeable problems along with the numerous advantages of its existence. Many hotel industries do not put this into consideration especially when it comes to the hotels performance and productivity. Equipment availability increases the rate of intra and inters communication in the hotel industry. However, the cost of installation and keeping the equipment in a working state is exorbitant. He pointed out that the initial cost outlay and maintenance of the equipment will increase their expenses. As a result of this some hotel industry do not purchase or make use of them without checking the cost effect.

Hotel industry professionals are not trained on the proper use of equipment or the various maintenance procedures that is required of equipment. He reveals that since not all products are manufacture or serviced by a single company, there should be a list of who to call in cases of emergencies. As a result of this the slightest malfunction problem gets out of hand. There is no safety rule or training measures given to employee on how to go about using equipment without it affecting their health. Many organizations do not provide adequate necessary equipment for their employees even there is need for it, in some organizations this equipment, though they exist strict measures, rules and protocols need to be followed as declared by the management before employees can have full access to them. There is also the general problem which is the fact that the benefit of using Equipment is not known to many organizations and as a result acquiring them is not their priority. The aspects of cost of purchasing it is core viewed as disadvantages and prefer to employ people to work instead of machine. This will not enable the employees to perform their duties efficiently and will slow down the employee productivity and performance.

1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

  3. To find out the Impact of equipment availability on the employee performance.
  4. To determine whether the employee achieve maximum production from the use of the equipment.
  5. To identity the roles of this equipment availability on the employee performance in hotel industry.

1.4    RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following research questions will be addressed in the cause of this study.

  1. Do employees achieve maximum production from the equipment?
  2. How are the problems encountered in procurement and maintenance of equipment?
  3. What types of equipment are available within the hotel industry?
  4. How adequate are the equipment within the hotel industry for effective performances of the employee?
  5. How does the provision of adequate equipment impact the employee performance in the hotel industry?

  • SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This project on competition will add to academic body of knowledge. It will be useful to student in Hospitality Management department. It also provides practical and intelligence-led solutions. It also, reveals that the hotel equipment availability increases the employee performance. This work will be of benefits to hotel industry because it will help both the management and employee to know the current equipment and how it’s can improve the performance of the employee.

5.6       RESEARCH HYPOTHESES

Arisen from the objectives of this study, the following hypotheses were raised in null hypotheses:

H01:     Level of employee performance does not have significant effect on achieving maximum production from the use of the equipment.

H02:     The role of Equipment availability does not have significant effect on employee performance in Hotels.

1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This research work is limited to hotel industry as the study under which the roles of equipment availability on employee performance in hotel industry. The research will also focus the roles of equipment availability on employee performance in hotel industry; also to find out the availability of equipment within the hotel industry, To find out the problems associated with the procurement and maintenance of equipment, To find out the Impact of equipment availability on the employee performance, To determine whether the employee achieve maximum production from the use of the equipment, To identity the roles of this equipment availability on the employee performance in hotel industry. This research also consumed a lot of time, and other resources constraint cost consideration also posed a serious problem.
