CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  • Introduction

The use of computer and information technology to aid in health emergency is quickly becoming a standard practice in health care. For nurses and other health-care team members, the use of computer technology provides quick access to important information about once health or illness. For you, it means no longer having to repeat your health information multiple times as you receive care and the assurance that members of your health-care team have ready access to current health information.

In this chapter, the study will be discussing the following sub headings; the background of study, statement of the problem, the aim and objectives of the study, significance, scope and limitations of the study as well as the definitions of technical terminologies used in the study.

1.2 Background of Study

COVID-19 is from the large family of corona virus that can cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV).

Covid19 spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, According to according to Nigeria statics  on Covid19 as at 9th July, 2020 over thirty thousand person (30 000) have been infected with this deadly virus and one thousand deaths recorded.

Further investigation shows that the wide range at which the virus/kills have created more fear/panic among indigenes of Nekede  community in Imo  state  citizens due to the following: Improper management, No platform for assistance in terms of emergency for easy contact tracing, Inadequate information/sanitization and finally High rate of stigmatization among people. For instance a person who is symptomatic or needs assistance on covid19 issues the person needs to call NCDC help line sometimes the line rings without anyone picking up the call by peradventure they pick up the call then interrogation and questioning takes place alongside with contact tracing in other to  locate the person, by then   the person must have been weak due to the delay;  if the person tries to visit any thereby hospital (not approved for corona diagnosis’) due to the stigma attached to it the doctors will abandon the patient or keep on referring the patients to different hospitals until the person gets to the treatment center.

It is against this background that this project work was initiated, with the aim of designing and implementing Covid19  emergency  response  system for faster contact tracing  and sanitization   this  will mitigate some of the identified problems of the existing system using National Centre For Disease Control Owerri  Imo State as a case study.

The new system will provide a medium whereby People Can get assistance on questions/issues related to corona Virus at their comfort zone also enable faster contacting tracing because the community will be working directly with NCDC to facilitate their effort in combating this pandemic  the system will also enable the indigenes to get daily statics on the infectious diseases.

1.3 Statements of the Problem

Investigation carried in the course of this study reveals the following challenges:

  1. In the existing system process of getting covid19 assistance is cumbersome and time consuming.
  2. Problems Inaccurate record
  3. Poor data security
  4. In the existing system there is no platform for assistance for those that exhibit symptoms

1.4     Aim and specific objectives of Study

The main aim of this study the   design and implementation of a web based Covid19 Helpdesk information System. In achieving this aim the following specific objectives will be accomplished through the design of a system

  1. To reduce the much process involve in getting Covid19 assistance  in the existing system
  2. To develop a system that can help in accurate statistics
  3. To develop a strong security for data

 

1.5     Significance of study

The new system when completed and implemented will enhance the following:1. Enable NCDC and similar organization to improve in their mode of operation.

  1. Build confidence in the citizens of Nigeria on the fear of covid19.
  2. The study will serve as a reference material to subsequent researchers in related topics.

1.6Scope of the Study

This study for now is limited to covid19 help desk and daily statistical for department of Imo state National center for diseases.

1.7     Limitation of the Study

  1. Financial constraint: The case study of the project is far from the school environment, the cost of visiting the place was immense..
  2. Difficulties in transportation: the road leading to the case study is spoilt, filled with pothole making the transportation a difficult one, motorist spends lot of hours conveying one to the place because of traffic jams encountered at the road and due to bad road network.
  3. Lack of research material: At the time of this project it was difficult laying my hands on any related books or journal in the library of the case study.

1.8     Definition of Terms

Symptom: is a departure from normal function or feeling which is apparent to a patient, reflecting the presence of an unusual state, or of a disease.

Sanitization is a process of cleaning certain area or surface in such a manner so that it is made bacteria-free and elementally clean all types of microbes and viruses that can infect the human body and cause different kinds of diseases

Diagnosis, the process of determining the nature of a disease or disorder and distinguishing it from other possible conditions.

Infect : to affect or contaminate (a person, organ, wound, etc.) with disease-producing germs.

Bacteria are single celled microbes. The cell structure is simpler than that of other organisms as there is no nucleus or membrane bound organelles.
