RELIGIOUS SENTIMENT AND VOTING BEHAVIOR IN NIGERIA

ETHNO-RELIGIOUS SENTIMENT AND VOTING BEHAVIOR IN NIGERIA

Nigeria, a country in West Africa, is well-known for its large and varied people and illustrious history. There are several steps involved in a general election in Nigeria, beginning with registering to vote and ending with the release of the results.

The actions of voters have a major impact on the result of elections in Nigeria. It’s affected by things like one’s socioeconomic situation, one’s area or ethnicity, and one’s loyalty to a certain political party or candidate. Voters in Nigeria frequently choose a political affiliation according to the party’s favoured policies and historical performance.

Voter turnout and the general election process in Nigeria are both affected by the country’s widening digital divide. The term “digital divide” is used to describe the disparity between those who have and those who do not have access to various forms of digital technology. This disparity is most noticeable in Nigeria’s rural areas, where people have less access to the internet and other forms of digital information.

Voters’ access to information about political candidates and their ideas may be hindered by a lack of access to digital technology. As a result, voters may make more hasty decisions based on less information while casting ballots. The digital divide can also make it harder for political parties to communicate with people and get them involved.

Initiatives like the National Broadband Plan and the opening of community information centres have helped narrow Nigeria’s digital gap. These programmes are designed to help underprivileged areas gain access to the internet and improve their digital literacy. There is still work to be done to guarantee that all Nigerians may benefit from the knowledge and opportunities that digital technologies provide.

Voter turnout and election outcomes in Nigeria’s general election are impacted by variables such as voters’ political party identification, candidates’ levels of popularity, voters’ economic standing, and their geographic and/or cultural background. Voter behaviour and access to information about political candidates in Nigeria are affected by the country’s wide digital divide. To guarantee a free and fair election for all Nigerians, efforts to close the digital gap must be prioritised.
