CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

The Internet is the global system of interconnected computers together networks that use the Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link devices worldwide (Wikipedia, 2016). It is a network of networks that consists of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies (Wikipedia, 2016).

An electronic message is a type of electronic record that is transmitted via an electronic network to the email address of a person or group of people and that is only accessible to recipients in that network. A file shared through this network is not available to the public but private to the network domain.

The Server functions by establishing a socket connection with the client system, confirming connections, and maintaining the email handler A.  The email handler is responsible for handling the interactions between the various clients and the server A.  The handler broadcasts messages to all the clients in a specific network, handles invitations to private networks, creation of public networks, and the state of the user list.

1.2       STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

The major problems regarding the delivery of an electronic messaging application system in the department of Computer Science of Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade is the unavailability of electronic messaging system in the department. This major problem gives rise to:

  1. Inability to disseminate information via electronic means except through memos and mouth to mouth.
  2. Group message cannot be sent independently with intermediate response from all member in the group in one location
  • Unavailability of instant message delivery to all client on the system
  1. Lastly, message broadcast within split of second has always been a challenge

1.3       AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The aim of this research work is to design an electronic messaging application for Computer Science department of Gateway Polytechnic, Saapade.

The objectives of this research work include:

  1. To eliminate the stress that is being passed through by students and staffs in sending and receiving messages from their colleagues
  2. To provide an efficient information sharing platform
  • To have a conceptual design for a secure, accessible and user-friendly emailing application
  1. Perform tests on the said system to assure functionality, accessibility and usability of the system.

1.4       SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Electronic messages have always play a vital role in the stability of any organization. Walking down to lecture rooms can take some time and making a call or sending a text can be expensive. The need to demonstrate the effectiveness of employing email systems as a viable complement to systems based on the regular text and calls, within the organization framework; and the need to achieve a greater degree of responsiveness among users of these systems i.e. students’ and system administrators enabling them collaborate effectively to enhance flow of information.

1.5       SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

In the course of realizing this project, I shall take into account the consideration that all development and analysis regarding the project will be centered on intranet standards and technology.

In full, the scope of the work is outlined thus:

  1. The solution, as conceived and developed in this study, will focus on standalone electronic messaging application.
  2. The messages delivered by the solution will be of one formats via, instant email services only

The system is limited to texts chats only and file transfer; voice messages are not part of the scope of this research work.

1.6       DEFINITION OF TERMS

Email:

Message:

Server: A computer program that provide services to other programs or devices, either in the same computer or over a computer network.

Network: Connection of multiple computers and/or other devices together to share information.

User authentication: the process within the context of an Internet application wherein eligible users are granted clearance to enter and use the application;

User state: the full set of all user-specific program data within a program or Internet application.

Mobile device: Any device with the functionality for information management and transfer free from spatial and temporal constraints.
